Special Interest Group on Technology Transfer

Welcome!

The Special Interest Group on Technology Transfer (SIG07) provides a forum for persons interested in methods, practices and resources related to market research, technology development, product design, technology transfer and commercialization pertaining to accessible and assistive products benefiting people with disabilities and elders.

Mission

SIG07 provides a persistent forum for the exchange of ideas and information between SIG07 members; with the RESNA community and with the world-at-large.  SIG07 provides a portal to member knowledge, expertise and resources; provides training and fosters academic and business collaborations. SIG07 is a proud affiliate of RESNA and undertakes activities that support the RESNA mission.

Overview

SIG-07 provides a forum for persons interested in the identification of needs, the development of technology and the application of this technology to accessible and assistive products benefitting persons with disabilities. There are many sources of technology including federal laboratories, universities, and the entire private sector. Factors facilitating technology development and product introduction include: markt demand; legislation that increases demand for assistive or accessible products; technological innovation; legislation that provides support for technology development; and application of universal and transgenerational design concepts to mainstream products. Barriers hindering technology development and product introduction include: small markets; reimbursement caps set by public and third party payers; challenging technical and design considerations; access to dispersed and heterogeneous consumer populations during product design and validation; and resource constraints common to most AT manufacturers. Interested readers can review a comprehensive model and terminology for technology transfer developed by Joe Lane at the RERC on Technology Transfer.
