Market Research
Notice to SIG-07 Members: Like many other sections of the SIG07 website, the "Market Research" page is a living document. We'd like to hear and integrate your opinions about the problems assistive technology manufacturers encounter obtaining market data or conducting market research; and solutions or resources that might benefit these manufacturers.
According to a Department of Commerce Study "Technology Assessment of the U.S. Assistive Technology Industry" (2003), "38 percent [of 294 manufacturers particpating in this study] - does not gather user input to support the quality of their [product] design efforts."
This is a striking statement from the perspective of best practices in product design. The appropriate involvement of consumers in product design generally leads to better products, broader and deeper markets, larger profits and higher consumer satisfaction.
Primary market resources would involve consumers directly in product design or evaluation. Secondary resources are generally compilations of market data that manufacturers and designers can refer to when making decisions about product design.
This page has a long! way to go. Please identify primary and market market resources and send this information to smbauer@buffalo.edu SB
